I went to see it, as everyone knew I would. I thought I'd drop my thoughts for you. First off, make no mistake, whoever decided to cast this woman for the part, deserves awards. Brie Larson is the spitting image of Carol Danvers from the comic books. I had to get that out of the way.
Story: B-
Not as engaging a story as I had hoped. It wasn't bad at all, but it wasn't great either. However, the main delivery was carried out. The Avengers: Endgame which is coming needed a hero with true super powers, to even stand up to Thanos. With Captain Marvel in the fold, that was delivered.
The story was true to Marvel's formulaic approach, with a few twists. They took their time determining if she was human, or Kree, or something else. Once all the pieces fall into place, it's a good payoff for the viewer.
Detracting here was the lean towards overdone humor. Though, thankfully, not as far gone as Thor: Ragnarok. There was a little too much familiarity and trust between Mar-Vel and Fury at the outset for my taste, but that I could accept.
Acting: B+
Samuel L Jackson is a perfect Nick Fury. However, you can use whatever make-up on him to make him look as young as possible, but when the character is required to run, you could see his age.
Brie Larson put everything into her role and did a great job. Though not her fault per-se, there were way too many heroic standing shots.
Cinematography: A+
Outstanding. Beautiful imagery, brought to life on the silver screen, none of which overshadowed the story, or interfered with it's telling. The added effects to Mar-Vel's character when her powers are fully realized was very well done.
Overall: A-
Not the best of the bunch, but far from the worst. Decent story, great effects and good actors make for an enjoyable time at the movies. More importantly, it added a lot of depth to the upcoming Avengers finale.
Bonus Movie
Just when you thought I only watch Marvel superhero movies...
I went and saw this recently, sub-titles and all.
Right out of the gate, I'll say this. I don't care how many CSI, or NCIS shows you watch, the mystery in this movie is not revealed until the very end. I'm really good at picking out the bad buy, but this movie took me to just past the mid-point before I started putting the pieces together.
Penelope Cruz is fantastic. Bardem was good and Darin was as well, but neither would have worked out as well, without Cruz's performance.
If you like a good mystery, and either speak Spanish, or don't mind sub-titles, go see this flick. You won't be disappointed.
