Creative Anxiety

So, this past weekend I was going to travel from New England to DC for the Malice Domestic Mystery conference (a great conference). Unfortunately, I had a bout of travel anxiety that caused me to instead hole up in my house with my cats. But that's not really what I want to write about. Instead, I'm going to focus on what most artists/authors go through....creative anxiety, i.e. the "I'm not good at this, no one will like this, what if it sucks?" mindset.

Well, I go through this all the time. And from my very scientific study of other writer's on twitter they go through it too! Everyone has their own ways of dealing with the anxiety (sometimes manifested by writer's block"). Here are some tips I've learned in my dealings with my crazy anxiety ridden brain.

1. Cats! I have three, and they are endlessly amusing (sometimes jerky), but mostly adorable. Cuddle time always helps calm the crazy

2. I watch "Friends" episodes. It's my favorite show, and it is always guaranteed to make me laugh (except for the "On a break" episode *sniff*)

3. Finally....I just put the writing away for a bit and pick up a book. Inspiration can come from anywhere, but sometimes reading some other creative work helps get the juices flowing.

I'm always interested in what other creative people do to overcome that crazy anxiety. If you have any thoughts, please share!
